occasionally i get a judder on the steering wheel coupled with the sound of the aux belt slipping. More so when the wheel is at full lock. From feeling the belt it feels tight enough, could it be that the pump is knackered?

What sort of job is swapping the pump, is it straightforward or a swine?

Im tempted to change the belt first just in case when its trying to get extra load when the steerings running its just slipping. If i rev a little more than idle it doesnt do it..

If the belts tight it's more likely to be the alternator clutch pulley, you can change these yourself but you will need the proper tool.

You cant buy just the pulley from fords but are available from factors.

according to your signature youa re a 1.9tdi owner, , a 1.9tdi as i understand has a seperate belt , just for the power steering pump only , and is not part of the alternator ( or air con if fitted) drive belt !!!

This is simple to adjust , 13mm spanner is all required , but dont over tighten !!!!

I do all my own maintenence so ill have to have a look. Is it just the pulley actually on the alternator?

Yes just the pulley, the pulley has a clutch inside which can either seize or slip this is what makes the slipping noise, this is a common fault.

I got my pulley from an alternator/starter repairer, he fitted it for me so didn't have to buy the tool cost

MK2 TDI's only have single auxiliary drive belt with automatic tensioner, it does the alternator power steering and aircon.

Yeah as above ive only got one auxbelt. theres not a lot of room for more tbh.

Thanks for the advice, im tempted to get it done by a garage too now ive seen i have to get the special tool. I suppose there would be a resale market for it once its done..

Just wanted to add weight to Chris's diagnosis. My Mk 2 tdi developed steering judder and I feared steering pump but after reading the forums went for a replacement alternator pulley after following a thread somewhere which suggested carefully trying to turn the alternator blades (through the alternator housing) with a small screw driver. The clutch if it is working will allow you to turn blades one way but not the other. If seized they will not want to move in either direction.

Good luck

Thank you for kind offer. My post wasn't clear but I have had pulley replaced a while ago at VW garage(ford won't fit pulley wheel alone!!!) Costly but sorted!

Would liked to have saved on the labour but without the tools decided it had to go in.

Cheers all the same and nice to know there are still people willing to share.
